Rheological properties and stability of ethylene vinyl acetate polymer-modified bitumen
Polymers are commonly used to improve properties of bitumen (BIT) as a binder for asphalt. Polymers improve the temperature susceptibility of bitumen by increasing its stiffness at high service temperatures and by reducing its stiffness at low service temperatures. The addition of polymers as bitumen modifiers contributes to the BIT viscoelasticity. The aim of this paper was to study the effect of the addition of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer on the morphology, rheological and physical properties before and after aging. The influence of EVA contents on rheological and physical properties which are included in conventional tests before and after aging was investigated. The results indicated that the rheological and physical properties as well as the morphology of polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) depended on the polymer content. The rheological properties of road bitumen were improved by means of EVA polymer modification as proven by conventional tests, the rheological parameters G*, ni*, delta and resistance to permanent deformation, i.e. rutting.
