Special pharmacology - Pharmacoeconomics
Over the last 30 years, medical expenditure has increased throughout the world at a considerably faster rate than other sectors of the economy. The main reasons, as we may still assume, behind this are aging, more chronic diseases and more new diseases, new drugs, expanded indications of current drugs, and development of pharmaceutical industry. A challenge for healthcare professionals is to provide quality patient care, which must not be compromised while attempting to contain costs and should demonstrate pharmacoeconomic value – that is, a balance of economic, humanistic, and clinical outcomes. This chapter includes a literature review covering the types of costs and benefits in health issues, the methodologies of pharmacoeconomic analysis, cost-minimization, cost-benefi ts, cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analysis, as well as its main characteristics, limitations and applicability.
