Influence of Soils Chemical Characteristics on the Photosynthesis and Vegetative Growth of Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur L.)

The inadequate nutrition of forest trees with mineral nutriments is usually manifested through lowered efficiency of photosynthetic pigments on the leaf’s cellular level and in the production of insufficient amount of carbohydrates necessary for a vegetative growth. The objectiv of this study was to determine the effect of soil’s various chemical traits on the intensity of photosynthesis and vegetative growth of pedunculate oak. The research was conducted on 4-year-old plants. Eight plants were planted per plot, two plots in all (plots A and B, for a total of sixteen plants). The plot A, compared to the plot B, was characterized by a higher soil pH, greater content of humus and nitrogen, and physiologically active phosphorus and potassium in the soil. Infra red gas analizer (LCpro+) has been used to measure the intensity of photosynthesis. The research determined height and diameter increment, number of primary and secondary branches, and the total number of leaves for the plants under study. There was a statistically significant difference in the intensity of photosynthesis between the plot A (28, 4 μmol CO2 m-2 s-1) and plot B (19, 3 μmol CO2 m-2 s-1), as well as the difference in diameter increment, which amounted to 6, 4 mm for the plot A, and 1, 9 mm for the plot B. It was also determined that the plot A had statistically significant advantage in the number of leaves and secondary branches compared to the plot B. There was not a statistically significant difference in the number of primary branches and the height increment between the studied plots. The higher values for the intensity of photosynthesis, as well as more intensive vegetative growth was recorded for the plants grown on the soil with a greater concentration of humus, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. This indicates that the chemical composition of soil has a significant effect on the intensity of photosynthesis and the vegetative growth of pedunculate oak.
