Regeneration of vegetation in burned areas of forest cultures of black pine (Pinus nigra J.F. Arnold) in the Mediterranean part of Croatia

Regeneration of fire- affected forest areas depends on biological-ecological and economic factors. Biological remediation (recovery) of burned areas can be made by progressive natural succession, planting seedlings, sowing seeds, or a combination of the above. Research was carried out in a burned area of Crikvenica Forest Office, in the Management Unit Kotar Planina, Jazmina area, where a 30 - year-old forest culture of black pine burned in 1987. Clearing of the burned site was done in the following year. During 1989, 1990 and 1991 reforestation was performed by sowing in patches, broadcast sowing and partly by planting seedlings. The species used for reforestation included black pine (Pinus nigra J.F. Arnold), Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.), Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L.), flowering ash (Fraxinus ornus L.) and pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens Willd.). In 1993, four experimental plots (25x25 m) were set up and pedological, phytocoenological and structural studies were periodically carried out. Juvenile thinning was done in two plots, while the remaining two plots were left to natural succession. The basic purpose of the research was to find the possibilities and methods of reconstructing burned areas and identify species that have proved best in the reforestation of a specific area. Data processing and analysis of the current situation is provided, as well as recommendations, guidelines, methods of biological remediation (recovery) of burned areas, and the restoration of forest ecosystems in dependence of pedological, climatic and vegetation conditions.
