Cholinesterase activities in human/plasma and their distribution profiles

The cholinesterase (ChE) activity profile in plasma and serum was evaluated for a group of 89 non-diseased subjects. The enzyme activity was measured spectrophotometrically with acetylthiocholine and propionylthiocholine as substrates. ChE activities in the serum were slightly but significantly higher than in plasma, and the ChE distribution profiles were skewed towards higher activities (skewness coef. 0.3-0.5). For diagnostic purposes ChE assays can be done in either serum or plasma, and activities in a population group can be expressed either as mean or median values, because the extent of the found differences is small.
