Fuel and lubricant consumption of chainsaw in Croatian lowland natural forest management

The aim of this research was to measure fuel and lubricant consumption of STHIL 650 chainsaw during felling and processing as well as to compare the results obtained with previous research. Furthermore, the aim of this research was to calculate EROI index for chainsaw during production of 1-meter firewood and long firewood. The research was conducted in three even-aged pedunculate oak stands of different age. In each stand a different felling and processing technology was used. Fuel and lubricant consumption was measured in thinning where 1-m firewood was produced. The measurement of fuel and lubricant consumption was also conducted in shelterwood regeneration felling (final felling) where timber assortments and long firewood were produced. The same technology of felling and processing was used in salvage felling where measurements were also conducted. Fuel and lubricant consumption was measured with medical syringes, volume of 0.6 L with 1 mL scale. The results of fuel and lubricant consumption are reported in liter per tree and in L/m3. With the increase of tree DBH and the increase of tree volume, respectively, fuel and lubricant consumption per tree increases, while consumption per m3 decreases. Compared with previous results, the decrease of consumption is observed as the consequence of organization improvement and chainsaw development. EROI index for the production of 1-m firewood (energy wood) is more unfavorable than EROI for the production of long firewood.
