Myron Goldsmith e l’Italia (1953-55)
Starting from autumn 1953 Goldsmith spent two years in Italy, in Rome, thanks to a Fullbright fellowship. After a bachelor’s and master's degree obtained at the Illinois Institute of Technology, he had worked for 8 years (1946-1953) at the Mies van der Rohe's studio in Chicago. Goldsmith obtained the fellowship with the aim of attending Pier Luigi Nervi's lectures, at the Faculty of Architecture in Rome, and to develop a research on the development of long span structures. The essay explores the vicissitudes of Goldsmith’s formative years in Italy, and the contribution of the italian engineering school to the development of Goldsmith’s work as the partner of the SOM, starting from 1955.
