Engineering of selected inorganic materials

Engineering is the application of science to the development of the materials with target properties (composites, high-technology or high-tech application, advanced materials). Clay was one of the earliest materials used to produce ceramics. The invention and development of ceramic engineering has added another dimension to the function of clay, as an alternative material to metal, which is vulnerable to moister and water and eventual rust. Until the 1950s, the most important ceramic materials were: (1) pottery, bricks and tiles, (2) cements and (3) glass, known as the traditional ceramics. The modern ceramic materials, classified as advanced ceramics, include graphite and its compounds (silicon carbide and tungsten carbide), which are both valued for their abrasion resistance, and are hence used in applications such as the wear plates of crushing equipment in mining operations. This invention started in 1960s and 1970s as part of military technology in atomic energy, electronics, communication and space travel. This script cover the chemical engineering aspect (based on the structure-property correlations) of the raw materials, production processes, control and application of the commercial ceramic materials, and it provide students the better assimilate the facts presented in lectures.
