Migration activity from Croatia to Germany and return tendencies – an account of recent developments

The paper discusses recent developments, current features and prospective trends of migration from Croatia to Germany. Based on actual empirical research it describes how temporary and circular migration as well as transnational activities between both countries has become a predominant pattern of skilled labor mobility reflecting thus general European mobility trends. Motives, responses to structural incentives, expectations and images regarding both home and host environment are being looked into as driving and structuring forces of migrant activity. Return, homeland migration and remigration from Germany to Croatia since independence as part of those current features are being looked at comparatively across generational lines. Taking into account the heterogeneity of homeland migration, there are nevertheless recognizable similarities of such migration and return experiences, which can be identified with respect to motivations, responses to chance structures, life planning, identity management, and integration. Transfers of knowledge, culture and experience going along with migration activities are being pointed out as undisclosed potential for innovation and development, and for international (bi- and multilateral) cooperation.
