Medieval Pilgrims from the Eastern Adriatic Coast to Terra Sancta and Jerusalem

Medieval pilgrimages from different European regions to Holy Land and Jerusalem are phenomenon examined by many European medievalists. However, pilgrimages to Terra sancta and Jerusalem from cities and towns situated on the East Adriatic shores are rather poorly analyzed. In fact, although Croatian medievalists examined some aspects of medieval pilgrimages and pilgrims we are still missing general overview of medieval pilgrimages to the Holly Land and Jerusalem. Therefore, in this paper I tried to present some aspects of pilgrimages from Istria, Croatian littoral, and Dalmatia to the Holly Land and Jerusalem in the medieval period. This research is based mainly on the examination of narrative sources, charters, and notary records. Since for the period prior to the second half of the thirteenth century there is a significant lack of contemporary sources, in this article I focused primarily on period of the High and the Late Middle Ages. Sources from that period, in the first place last wills recorded by communal notaries, are preserved in great number for almost all cities and towns on the East Adriatic coast which enables the analysis of pilgrimages and pilgrims from various point of view. Thus, here I examined the gender of pilgrims, their social status as well as the costs of pilgrimages to Terra sancta and Jerusalem. Another aspect that I analyzed in this article is the problem of crusades to Terra sancta as a form of pilgrimages based on the example from the end of the thirteenth century i. e. after the fall of fort Acre in manibus impiorum. In contrast to European and American medievalists, who examined this problem in details, Croatian historiography is still in the beginning of the research of that form of medieval pilgrimages.
