Secular trends in heating and cooling monthly demands in Croatia
This paper presents some long-term trend analyses for five locations in Croatia during the 1901- 2008 period, carried out for the purpose of revising the Croatian heating and cooling energy policy. Trends in monthly heating degree-days (HDD) and in cooling degree-days (CDD) were determined for three related values of temperature thresholds each, and analyzed to provide insight into the influence of desired thermal comfort on the amount of changes in energy consumption. Monthly trends in corresponding numbers of heating days (HD) and cooling days (CD) were also analyzed. Common investigation of HDD and HD trends as well as of CDD and CD trends proved to be essential for a complete description of climate-related conditions important for the changes in energy demands for heating and cooling. In few cases, trend dependencies upon the implemented temperature thresholds were rather pronounced and reflected in great spatial and temporal diversities of monthly trends. The statistical significance of detected monthly trends pointed out quite diverse possible impacts of climate changes on heating and cooling energy consumptions throughout three main climate regions in Croatia (continental, mountainous and maritime) and even within the same regions. It is confirmed that the applied monthly scale of analyses is suitable for assessing the heating and cooling practices.
