Turning borders of war into borders of peace and backwards - Re-bordering processes and Europeanization in Western Balkans
The goal of the paper is to compare border realities before and after Croatian membership in EU. Research question focuses on influence of Europeanization process onto open issues related to borders, but as well cross-bordering dynamics of local communities. In two case studies (two most different cases) compared in this paper process of influence of open border issues and Europeanization on bilateral relations of neighboring countries will be examined. After the dissolution of Yugoslavia a lot of open border issues emerged in region of Western Balkans. Those issues have had different impacts on bilateral relations of neighboring countries. The main goal of this paper is to show the causality between open border issues, geopolitical perception, conflict potential, Europeanization and bilateral relations on two most different cases in post-Yugoslav space – between Croatia and Slovenia, and Croatia and Montenegro. The mechanism of turning borders of war into borders of peace and backwards will be analyzed and discussed trough prisms of bordering and re-bordering, geopolitical perception, identity and Europeanization in Western Balkans.
