Property under the Protection of the Authorities: Punishment of Thieves in Medieval Dubrovnik
The practice of the medieval Criminal Court of Dubrovnik displayed a dichotomy between the 'ordinary' and 'grave' thefts. By ordinary thefts, the court showed almost no interest in persecuting the culprits and left the process management entirely to the plaintiff. However, by serious thefts and those committed by professional criminals, the state authorities descended upon the culprit with full power, in order to be able to pass the sentence and apply severe physical punishments.
