Hydrogen Islands - Utilization of Renewable Energy for an Autonomous Power Supply

Islands are ideal polygons and showcases for demonstration of individual hydrogen technologies as well as the entire mini hydrogen, i.e. hydricity economies. Experience from those demonstration projects will be valuable in designing and implementing larger hydrogen systems on national and regional levels. A survey of the ongoing or proposed demonstrations of the integrated hydrogen systems on the islands all over the world is presented. They vary in size from kW to MW, and in scope from a refuelling station to a complete autonomous island energy supply. In general, a system for autonomous energy supply consists of devices for utilization of available renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic panels or wind turbines, a subsystem for energy storage, inverters and converters necessary for matching the voltage and type of current between power sources, energy storage and the load, and a control and power management subsystem. A subsystem where hydrogen serves for energy storage usually consists of an electrolyzer, hydrogen storage which may or may not include a compressor, and a fuel cell. The key features of the involved technologies are discussed, and the principles of optimal sizing and energy management and control strategy of an autonomous energy system are presented.
