Survival analysis in clinical practice: analyze your own data using an Excel workbook

Survival of patients and time to event of interest are of central importance in everyday hematology/oncology clinical practice. Methods needed to summarize and analyze such data are collectively termed survival analysis and usually require commercial statistical packages to be utilized. Custom made Excel workbook intended for summarizing and analysis of survival data is presented here. This free and user friendly statistical program uses methods of Kaplan and Meier and the log-rank test. It provides users with a handful of essential information regarding the data-set and produces customizable survival curves. Besides its practical purpose of data analysis, it also provides users with direct insight into the mechanics of statistical tests and provides a unique “real-time” learning experience, a feature inaccessible by commercial statistical programs. This program can be used on almost any computer that has MS Office installed. This increases accessibility to a broader public and delivers ability to quickly screen for significant effect on survival where it is really needed – common workplace.
