Bojišta u utilitarno-propagandnoj i autobiografskoj literaturi - poneki zagrebački pogledi

ORIGINAL EDITORIAL SUMMARY: The complete overview of utilitarian propaganda and autobiographical literature is still impossible due to years of researchers’ neglect – in this case mainly that related to the battlefield, not so much with the background or political life – and distinction between the two may not always be consistently implemented. In the context of armed conflict, words such as propaganda or promotion today tend to have a negative connotation, but certain political and ideological points of view can be promoted more or less obvious, can be boring or even literary attractive, in a wide horizon of so-called psychological warfare. Old lesson shows that the most pervasive propaganda is the one in which there is no making up, or one that largely corresponds to the previous expectations of the recipient. In doing so, of course, we must ask ourselves to what extent is our personal point of view the product of the outcome of the First World War, following which during most of the 20th century Habsburg Empire was demonized as the eternal prison of nations, the junior partner in the German advance to East. For example, autobiographical texts from more or less loyal members of the Austro-Hungarian armed forces were only exceptionally published during both Yugoslav states, thus leaving the dominant depiction of the First World War in Croatia the one written by Krleža, while knowledge of the existence of different perceptions are just beginning to spread. Due to its publishing houses and printing facilities, Zagreb during the war was the place of publishing for many publications. Finally, as an educational, industrial and general economic center, Zagreb received among its residents a greater number of immigrants, including as well authors of war memoirs.
