Using of interactive and strategic management and strategic management tools in research project of “taxonomy, ecology and utilization of Carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua L.) and Bay laurel (Laurus nobilis L.)” for sustainable development of croatian adriatic coast and islands

Carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua L.) is an important component of the Mediterranean vegetation and its cultivation in marginal and prevailing calcareous soils of the Mediterranean region is important environmentally and economically. It is nutritionally and protectively very valuable plant. In spite of its historical, cultural, nutritive and ecological value, the carob has been neglected in practice, as well as in research and development of Croatian Adriatic coast and islands. Bay laurel (Laurus nobilis L.) is also like carob tree protectively very valuable plant, which grows in similar ecological conditions. Bay laurel also spreads over the Mediterranean basin and is an important component of the Mediterranean vegetation. Additionally, it is very valuable as medicinal plant and spice. So far, no studies about ecology, diversity and utilization of these two very important plant species have been carried out. Since the year 2014 the research project of “Taxonomy, Ecology and Utilization of Carob Tree (Ceratonia siliqua L.) and Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis L.)” (Acronym: TEUCLIC ; grant number: HRZZ-11-2013-3304) supported by Croatian Science Foundation has been in progress. The whole project is divided into 3 working packages and 23 scientists from 5 different Croatian research and academic organizations are working in 3 research divisions, within each division their research work being carried out by the two teams, according to specific tasks and aims.It is obvious that the project organization and management is designed so as to complete functional organization using the Interactive and Strategic Management (ISM) and Strategic Management Tools (SMT) because the project results should be the basis for the Interactive Strategic Planning of the Croatian Islands, considering the ecological, economic and security (for instance, prevention of forest fires on karst areas) aspects of these plant species. Respecting the small level of pollution of Croatian islands and some coastal areas, far from main roads and urban areas, growing and processing of bay laurel is completely complementary with growing of carob trees and both of them, as alternative or even main crops, might have a positive impact on reconstructing of agriculture and economy of Croatian islands. Thus, development of production of carob in Croatia might have a positive result on economic and consequently demographical revitalization of Croatian islands. Moreover, the most dominant plant species of karst areas of Croatian islands nowadays belong to Pinaceae which are highly flammable. Thus, spreading of carob trees in spontaneous vegetation of karst forests on Croatian Adriatic Islands has security aspect in prevention, easier controlling and even stopping forest fires during the dry season.
