Test reference year (TRY) in future climate for Croatia

Test Reference Year (TRY) is an artificially constructed year of hourly data which is representative for prevailing climate (multiyear period). It is a selection of the most appropriate months from a number of different years derived according to procedure from normative document HRN EN ISO 15927-4. It is used as meteorological background for dynamic building energy simulations. Meteorological conditions have major impact on heating and cooling energy demand. In order to adapt building for the future climatic conditions and climate change, it is good to compile test reference year from future climate simulations. In this study, daily data for two periods, 2011-2040 (P1) and 2041-2070 (P2), for RCP4.5 scenario from CNRM-CM5 global climate model were used in future TRY compilation. Hourly data of air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed from Zagreb- Maksimir meteorological station were used and global radiation from CM-CAF, EUMETSAT for period 1983-2005 (P0). Future TRY was compiled by correcting the P0. Test reference year for periods P1 and P2 was compared to P0. Changes in future TRY are not equally distributed throughout the year. Lower relative humidity combined with higher temperature and higher wind speed indicate dry and hot cooling seasons with larger number of extreme events. Considering only test reference year, heating demand in future will decrease and cooling demand will increase but cooling season changes of meteorological parameters are expected to have larger influence on increase of energy demand.
