Giuseppe Garibaldi, hero in the Piedmont of the Balkans: reception of the narrative of the Italian Risorgimento in the Serbian press
The construction of the national hero is one of the most fertile aspects of the nation-building process in the nineteenth century. Giuseppe Garibaldi, with his victories and defeats, with his adventurous and romantic life, became one of the most popular and celebrated modern heroes internationally. In the specific case of Serbia, the process of reception is accompanied by that of "appropriation". The worship of Garibaldi was in fact promoted through topoi of the Italian Risorgimento, but it was then used to express specific tensions and projects tied to the local context.
