GIS Mapping of Croatian Landform Diversity Using the Geomorphons Approach
Croatia as part of Hellenic-Balkan-Dinaric- Carpathian subcontinental geographic entity includes three main natural and geographic sections: Pannonian, Dinaric and Adriatic area with dominant fluvial, fluviodenudational and karst, with some eolian, glacial and suffosional morphogenetic relief categories, forming interesting area in aspect of relief geodiversity. Nowadays, GIS tools are often used for landform mapping especially due to ease of analyzing and visualizing relief from global and regional surface and terrain data. A geomorphon is a relief-invariant, orientation- invariant, and size-flexible abstracted elementary unit of terrain which enables terrain analysis without resorting to differential geometry. Based on the EU-DEM, landform element map of Croatia was produced and areas with highest geomorphon diversity were detected providing foundation for relief geodiversity research. Further, comparison of geomorphons diversity for morphogenetic relief categories is given.
