The influence of chloride ion concentration on the corrosion behavior of the CuAlNi alloy

The influence of different chloride ions concentration (0.1 %, 0.5 %, 0.9 % and 1.5 % NaCl solution) on electrochemical behaviour of cast CuAlNi alloy, were investigated with electrochemical techniques (open circuit potential measurements, linear and potentiodynamic polarization measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)). After polarization measurements, electrode surfaces were investigated by optical microscope and with SEM/EDS analysis. Polarization measurements revealed that the increase in chloride ion concentration leads to increase the corrosion current density values and decrease the polarization resistance values which indicated higher corrosion attack on the alloy. Investigation of alloy surfaces by optical microscope and SEM/EDS analysis has shown that there is no indication of pitting corrosion in 0.1 % NaCl solution but pits have been clearly visible on the samples which were investigated in higher chloride concentration solutions. EDS analysis have shown the existence of copper oxide on electrode surface, and the presence of a small percentage of aluminium in the form of aluminium oxide.
