Propranolol Adverse Reactions
Systematic review of propranolol adverse reactions will be presented in this chapter on the basis of all accessible data in scientific literature. The most common adverse reactions are due to known pharmacological properties of non-selective beta-blockade and propranolol high lipophilicity. Reactions that do not appear to be a result of beta- adrenergic receptor blockade are very rare. Abrupt cessation of chronic propranolol therapy can induce adverse reactions regarding exacerbation of angina pectoris and, in some cases, acute myocardial infarction. Propranolol overdose can lead to hypotension, bradycardia, bronchospasm and acute cardiac insufficiency. Recently, propranolol is approved for indication proliferating infantile haemangioma (IH) requiring systemic therapy in infants by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA). Approval resulted in more common prescription of propranolol in this population following more available reports on adverse reactions for this indication. Common adverse reactions of propranolol regarding sleep disturbance, fatigue and gastrointestinal symptoms are reported in adult and pediatric population. However, lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and bronchiolitis were reported only in pediatric population.
