Seismicity and seismic sources in the greater Kvarner-Velebit area, Croatia: Recent advances

The Kvarner region, most notably the Rijeka epicentral area stretching from Ilirska Bistrica to Klana and further to Novi Vinodolski and Senj (including the Krk island), is one of the seismically most active parts of Croatia. The adjacent area of Mt. Velebit exhibits considerably lower current seismicity, which fact is still not properly understood. Recent multidisciplinary efforts to improve the understanding of of the area are being made in the framework of the VELEBIT project (Croatian Science Foundation, 2015-2019). The seismological part of the project includes improvement of seismic monitoring by installing a number of temporary seismic stations (the Velebit-Net), historical earthquake research, relocation of all recorded events with increased precision, computation of fault-plane solutions (FPS), studies of attenuation and anisotropy, insights into the structure of the lithosphere, etc. Here we report on recent investigations of four important historical earthquakes from the 18th and the 19th century, the preliminary results of earthquake relocation using a novel approach of sourcespecific station corrections, as well as re-computed and new FPS for earthquakes in this area (Herak M. et al., 2016). Macroseismic study of historical earthquakes was done in order to assess their intensity and location. Herak D. et al. (2017) investigated the event near Bakar and Krk (1750, 1838, and 1904), whereas for the Klana earthquake of 1870 we present our preliminary findings.
