Lifestyle, dietary habits and health locus of control in croatian adolescents from two distinctive regions

INTRODUCTION: Croatian adolescents differ in their dietary habits, depending on their gender and age group, but particularly by their place of living. Aims of this study were to determine the differences in dietary habits, nutrition- related lifestyle and health locus of control in adolescents who live in two distinctive Croatian regions, in relation to their place of living (region), gender and age group, using interdisciplinary anthropological approach. METHODS: Cross-sectional study included a total of 165 female students (110 from island Hvar and 55 from Baranja), as well as 47 male students (37 from Hvar and 10 from Baranja). Dietary habits, nutrition-related lifestyle and health locus of control were measured by specially designed questionnaires. RESULTS: Compared with boys in the same region of living, girls from Hvar have higher weight control and more frequently use plant-based diet, while girls from Baranja have stronger internal health locus of control and more take care about their bodies. Girls from Baranja more take care about their bodies and more often choose unhealthy nutrition and rarely fish-based diet, as compared with girls from Hvar. Boys from Baranja (compared with those from Hvar) showed more frequent taking care about their bodies, higher weight control and internal health locus of control, more often have plant-based diet, but also more frequent unhealthy nutrition style. CONCLUSION: Although limited by sample size, this study emphasizes the need for differentiated education about nutrition and physical activity, with respect to gender and place of living of Croatian adolescents.
