Chapter 4.7: The impact of cosmic rays on clouds, Earth's climate response to a changing Sun

Even a small cloud response to changes in the cosmic ray flux could provide a powerful ampli cation mechanism, enabling energetically minute variations in solar activity to impact the Earth's climate system. Consequently, of all the proposed solar-terrestrial linkages, arguably none has garnered as much controversy, nor been as hotly debated, as the cosmic ray-cloud link. Potentially, this hypothesis could have over-turned conventional wisdom regarding natural climate forcings and the role of anthropogenic emissions in recent observed global warming. But, as we will discuss in this chapter, clear evidence in favor of a cosmic ray-cloud link has yet to be presented.
