Correlation between geomagnetic field disruption and GPS positioning performance degradation during rapidly developing space weather storm
The rapidly developing space weather storm that occurred on 17 March, 2015 caused a significant disturbance of the Earth's magnetic field. Dubbed the St Patrick's 2015 Storm, it has caused severe and rapid degradation of the satellite navigation performance. Here we present the results of a study of correlation between the GPS positioning performance error and geomagnetic indices throughout the St Patrick's 2015 Storm using the geomagnetic indices and GPS pseudorange observations collected in Croatia. The study results aim at contribution to foundation development for the local model for GNSS positioning performance degradation forecast, thus allowing for robust and resilient GNSS positioning service development for transport and personal navigation applications.
