Monitoring and comparison of two pheromone preparations for the capture of Orthotomicus erosus in Marjan Forest Park

Within the Marjan Forest Park, as well as in other stands in the Mediterranean part of Croatia, an increase in the appearance of the Mediterranean pine beetle Orthotomicus erosus (Wollaston, 1857) has been noticed. Until recently it was presence has been weakly expressed, but its secondary character has been changed due to drought related to climate change. Given the changes in habitat conditions, the biological data of this kind of Mediterranean pine beetle is subject to a check. The Mediterranean pine beetle, allegedly can have up to 7 generations over a year. In order to determine the number of generations with respect to the changes in the habitat conditions (in Marjan Forest Park), pheromone traps of the Theysohn type were set. The Pheroprax and Erosowit pheromone preparations were used for monitoring and determining the number of generations of the Mediterranean pine beetle. Theysohn traps were placed in 5 locations within the Marjan Forest Park area. In each of these locations, two Theysohn traps were placed, one with Pheroprax and the other with Erosowit pheromone preparations. The method of dry captures was used, and the catches were collected once a week. The number of species and individuals caught in the Marjan Forest Park showed that both the pheromone preparation attracted the target species, but with a significant difference to the forestry practice. Pheromone preparation Pheroprax, besides the catches of the Mediterranean pine beetle Orthotomicus erosus, had significantly higher catches of Pityogenes calcaratus (Eichhoff, 1878). This fact is significant for forestry practice when counting catches from pheromone traps.
