Assessment of hazardous trees in urban forests of the City of Zagreb

Urban forests and trees provide many benefits for people living in cities that influence better quality of life and wellbeing of urban population. However, the presence of trees in cities can lead to certain negative consequences, out of which tree failure related damages are specially pronounced. Hazardous trees are structurally unsafe trees which can cause considerable damage on property, cause harm to people and disrupt everyday activities if part of a tree or entire tree fails. Through systematic tree risk assessment, we can identify hazardous trees whose removal can reduce risk of damage in case of tree failure. Assessment of hazardous trees can be done visually or with the use of arboricultural instruments. Research on assessment of hazardous trees in urban forests in the City of Zagreb was conducted in four mature forest stands that are part of management unit „Park-šume grada Zagreba“. Results of assessment of hazardous trees with the use of visual methods indicate that a small percentage of trees in urban forests in the City of Zagreb present hazard. There were differences between used visual assessment methods. With the use of EHT methods, higher average risk assessment rating was achieved than with the use of VTA method. In risk assessment rating with the VTA method, the highest influence was related to the symptoms of swelling, while in risk assessment rating with the EHT method, the highest influence was related to tree defects such as dead branches in crowns and restricted area for root development. With the use of sound tomograph and resistograph, it was possible to accurately locate areas of weakened wood inside a tree as a result of wood decay fungi degradation. With the use of modern arboricultural instruments and visual methods for hazardous trees identification we can reduce likelihood for damage occurrence which in turn leads to increase of public safety in urban forests.
