Carolingian Weapons and the Problem of Croat Migration and Ethnogenesis
The paper discusses the theory of Croat arrival to Dalmatia at the end of the 8th century under Frankish leadership and presents arguments against it. One of the focuses is also on Carolingian swords, sometimes regarded as proof of such a migration. Instead, they are here viewed as important elements in the formation of the identity of the new ruling elite in the Dalmatian hinterland at the end of the 8th, and the early 9th centuries.
