This study explored how midle school students perceive scientists and science and whether differences exist between girls and boys. In addition, the relationship between students' perception and students' attitudes toward STEM school subject areas, and students' participation in STEM out-of-school activities is explored. We tested the moderating effects of students' STEM self-concept, previous school achievment and parental attitudes towards STEM area in the context of students' science and scientist perception. Participants were 361 middle school students (sixth, seventh and eighth grades, age range 12 to 15 years), from schools with working conditions similar to the average schooling conditions in the Croatian education system. The results showed that middle school students have fairly positive images of scientists and science, while students' perception is at the same time to a certain extent mixed with stereotypical, quite undesirable perception of science and scientists. Students with better school achivement, more prounonced STEM self-concept, and those who are more involved in out-of-school STEM activities percieve science and scientist more positive. Overall, the strenght and structure of relationship between students' perception and their interest for STEM school area and STEM out-of-school activities is the same in the group of students with high and low interest for STEM carrers. The absence of this moderation role that interest for STEM carrers could have indicates that interests for STEM carrers are likely weakly structured at this age in this group of students. There were no significant differences between girls and the boys regarding to perception of science and scientis. This finding is significant and indicates that the period of middle school is obviously still the period in which the same interests exist among girls and boys. The paper discusses the specific implications of the study outcomes and provides some implications for possible educational interventions and future research.
