Hopes and Realities of Return: Contexts, approaches and conceptual considerations
Whereas emigration movements triggered by the fall of the Iron Curtain have received considerable public and scholarly attention, remigration has been looked at to a much lesser extent. The text introduces into the state of the art of return migration ; it sketches various (re-)migrant types in the context of post-socialist Europe, and how they reflect on Eastern Europe's emigration history in the 20th century. It points out how flight and displacement have not only lasting impact on those directly affected but continue to play an important role in the lives of their descendants. It discusses the role of memory, of romanticized and nostalgic notions of the lost homeland, and of different conceptualizations of home/homecoming at play in remigration processes ; the challenges returning migrants face specifically in post- socialist transformation environments ; the social, economic and political potential inherent in return migration.
