Stable hierarchical ZnO structures for photocatalytic degradation of 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid
ZnO films of hierarchical flower-like and ribbon-like morphology were prepared by thermal transformation of layered basic zinc acetate (LBZA) films, formed by chemical bath deposition from a methanolic solution. LBZA films with the flower-like morphology formed at 55 °C and lower temperatures, while the ribbon-like morphology required 60 °C and concentration of 0.3 M. The thermal transformation of LBZA into ZnO was investigated by thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Calcining at 200 °C was sufficient for full transformation of LBZA into ZnO while preserving the hierarchical morphology. ZnO films of differing morphology and on various substrates (glass slide, glass mesh and glass cloth) were equally suitable photocatalysts for photocatalytic degradation of 2, 5-dihydroxybenzoic acid. The flower-like ZnO films were resistant to photocorrosion up to eight photocatalytic cycles.
