Synergy of RES and E mobility as Key for Energy Efficiency of an Energy System

Croatia, as a MS of the EU, is obliged to plan the energy policy implementation in line with strategic EU documents and define a long-term strategy for low-carbon development accordingly. Such a policy will inevitably lead to significant electricity consumption in the transport sector, which will also be reflected in the load curve of the entire power system. The increase of renewable energy sources (RES) share in power generation mix will lead towards low-carbon electricity generation, while massive roll-out of electric vehicles (EVs) will eliminate harmful emissions on the demand side. This paper researches the synergy effects of RES supply and EV demand and evaluates the potential to increase the efficiency of RES utilization supported by the optimization of EV charging process. For this purpose, to forecast the future e mobility energy demand and to convert it to the hourly load curve of the entire year, two modules of MAED model were applied, which was followed by the integration of the electricity demand and generation into the energy system simulation model PLEXOS. Simultaneously, the model for optimization of electric vehicle charging process was developed, which provided different hourly electricity load curves of e-mobility energy demand depending on extent and intensity of optimization. Results have shown that optimization of charging process can be beneficial to energy efficiency of the whole energy system.
