Video-rad : Muzički ikonostas slikara Alekseja Javljenskoga

ALEXEJ JAWLENSKY (Torzhok, 13 March 1864— Wiesbaden, 15 March 1941) is one of the painters to emerge from Russia during the first half of the 20th century. He spent most of his working life in Germany and went through Expressionist and Abstract periods. Jawlensky was one of the great modern explorers of the soul, for whom art was "a longing for God." He regarded human face as the sign of an inner vision, so paintings from his series entitled "Abstract Heads" (1918-1935) pulsate with colour and seem to express the combined force of architecture, music, sculpture and dance. "Music Iconostasis" is an example of a contemporary virtual exhibition where paintings occupy not only space but also time. Jawlensky's serial paintings flash in succession in Mirna Rudan Lisak’s computer animation, creating in the observer the feeling of a single whole. She decoded each Jawlensky's colour composition in order to test whether his "Abstract Heads" in fact have music chords hiding in them. Based on the chords, Robert Selimović composed electronic music to provide the viewer an interdisciplinary experience. This contribution is an accompaniment to Mirna Rudan Lisak's essay "Music Iconostasis of the Painter Alexej Jawlensky" that was published as a chapter of her book entitled "Abstract Reproductive as Productive Art: Chromatic Fantasies of the Composer Alexander Scriabin, Painter Alexej Jawlensky and Pianist Ivo Pogorelich." It was projected in 2015 during the book promotion at the Academy of Music in Zagreb, and in 2019 in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb on the occasion of marking the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Bauhaus.
