Studies of the effect of various treatments on the viability of Toxoplasma gondii tissue cysts and oocysts

Complete inactivation of T. gondii tissue cysts was achieved by freezing at -7 C for 4 days, by heating at 58 C for 15 min. or by irradiation with a dose of 0, 7 kGy, whereas sporulated oocysts were completely inactivated by freezing at -20 C for 3 weeks or by heating at 58 C for 15 min. Drying of oocysts at room temperature for 7 weeks and separate treatments with disinfectants, alcohols, or formalin failed to kill all oocysts.
