Pig slurry - a surface and ground water pollutant

Treatment and disposal of stock breeding manure, especially pig slurry, always pose an ecologic problem. The organoleptic, physicochemical and epidemiologic-epizootic composition of the manure presents a hygienic risk for the atmosphere, soil and water. The atmosphere, soil and water ecosystem is modified irrespective of whether the manure is spread over the arable land, used for irrigation, or drained into the waters. The related problems include emanation of malodor, detrimental gases and microorganisms, and contamination of the surface and underground waters and soil ( Strauch & Ballarini, 1994). The aim of these review was to present the results of the investigation of the drinking water quality from water sources located close to the soil fertilized with pig slurry and the results of pollution of a stream, used as drinking water for livestock, produced by pig slurry applied to pasture. This study assessed the degree of pollution of a drinking water, produced by manure applied as fertilizer. The values of all factors examined were increased markedly, especially organic pollution, nitrogen compounds and bacteriological parameters. Concerning water protection against pollution from agriculture sources the Code of Good Agriculture Practice has been introduced. It implies a fertilization program determining the quantity, timing, and distribution of manure depending on the characteristics of the soil, climate and crop.
