Sustainable Development and Packaging Management

Due to the fact that all goods placed on the marked are package, the packaging can be observed as &laquo ; necessary evil&raquo ; of modern civilisation. After the product has been used a protective function of package ends and a problem of packaging waste rises. Intensive concern on packaging and packaging waste management was emphasised in the second half of the 20th century. An important event on sustainable development adoption was the OUN summit held in Rio de Janeiro, the result of which was decision-making directives of European parliament and the Council of packaging and packaging waste. In this paper the situation on packaging and packaging waste management in Serbia and Montenegro (SCG) and Croatia, the countries which are in the process of integration into European Union, is discussed. So far SCG has not adopted regulation on packaging waste management, while this issue is regulated by existing legislation in Croatia. It follows that SCG and Croatia have reached different levels of international standards implementation, in this area.
