Excessive billiary hyperplasia in a female green iguana (Iguana iguana)
A female green iguana was presented for necropsy with history of generalized oedema, jaundice, intermittent loss of appetite and lack of coordination. Necropsy revealed slightly enlarged liver with moderate amounts of fibrin on liver surface. Histologically, liver consisted of numerous flattened bile ducts, surrounded with connective tissues and necrotic/apoptotic hepatic cells. Based on gross morphology of liver, uniformity of microscopic lessions throughout the liver, low mitotic activity, lack of celular atypia and absence of vascular invasion, this condition was diagnosed as excessive bile duct hyperplasia. The complexicity of diagnosing neoplastic conditions in reptiles leaves this case open to further discussions. Bacterial culture revealed the presence of Salmonella stanley in liver samples.
