Preface
The Third Dubrovnik Multiple Sclerosis Conference was held in May 19-21, 2005. Distinguished experts in various aspects of the disease from 14 countries lectured and participated in the discussions. Multiple Sclerosis is one of the most elusive of diseases. The search for its etiology is ongoing since its exact pathogenesis is still uncertain. One reason for the clinical importance of this often cripling disease is that it affects men and women at the height of their professional and productive lives ; thus, search for effective therapy is urgent. It is surprising as well as distressing to note how frequently treatment is initiated in patients who have been incorrectly diagnosed as having multiple sclerosis. One of the reasons for these mistakes is the failure to appreciate the frequency af acute and recurrent disseminated encephalomyelitis in the adult, and to recognize its pathognomonic clinical and imaging features. This important problem received a great deal of attention during this Third Dubrovnik Conference on Multiple Sclerosis and is extensively discussed in several articles in this issue. The challenge of multiple sclerosis is both exciting and frustrating but it is one that fortunately attracts imaginative and talented investigators and clinicians.
