The role of the information-communication technologies in achieving higher business competitiveness on international markets
Achieving and sustaining competitiveness both at a national and a firm level is the basis for economic development. Competitiveness needs to be analyzed from a holistic perspective because competitiveness of a nation and competitiveness of a firm are mutually connected. In order to enable firms to be competitive certain macroeconomic preconditions have to be ensured. In this globalization era the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) represents one of the most useful tools for firms to learn about markets and global trends and to improve their performance. In that sense, ICTs are often seen as a way for firms to gain higher value for their products and services. The use of ICT can also help firms learn about innovative practices that will allow them to upgrade their business. It can help reduce inefficiency in the use of capital and labor, and consequently lead to higher productivity growth. This paper discusses the role of the ICT in achieving higher firm competitiveness, and therefore, higher national competitiveness as well. A comparative analysis of the ICT usage by firms in selected European countries will be performed, and certain conclusions about the relationship between firms’ ICT usage and successful inclusion into the global trends will be given as well.
