Barriers of adoption of advanced technology
Key enabling technologies (KET) are often crucial technological prerequisites for other technologies, products and processes which are expected to impact existing technologies by expanding their usefulness, to enable new technological approaches and to trigger wider applications in a number of industries. Enabling technologies often have no direct easily recognizable connection with applications which makes it difficult to even determine relevant impact categories. KETs are nanotechnology, micro- and nanoelectronics including semiconductors, advanced materials, biotechnology and photonics, advanced manufacturing systems. In Europe, manufacturing is declining in order to stay competitive Europe has built a fund for enhancing usage and production of KET in order to stay competitive (EC, 2013). Since these technologies are new not much research is done on the level of adoption of these technologies. Large part of the literature review reviled many obstacles in KET related manufacturing so in depth interviews with companies are needed. Both questions are addressed by a survey research conducted in Croatia, and a following workshop to establish problems companies that use KET had in terms of implementation.
