Effect of constructional characteristics and sample preparation of fabric on textile dust generation
Textile dust is one of possible sources of nosocomial infections. To increase safety of hospital textiles, two-step approach is needed: decreasing microbial viability on textile surface and decreasing generation of particles from same surface. In order to produce fabric with low particle generation count for use in hospital and healthcare facilities, preliminary research was conducted to determine effect of different weaves on particle generation from fabric. Samples of three basic weaves (plain, twill and satin) but otherwise same structural properties (yarn, fabric density) were tested according to ISO 9073-10 method for nonwovens with some modifications for woven fabric. Possible factors for particle generation specific to woven fabric were investigated. Better insight into generation of textile dust from woven fabric was obtained as well as some pointers for future investigation.
