Hygienic water qulity of lakes in the vicinity of the Zagreb Zoo, Croatia

The hygienic quality of the water in the First and Second Maksimir Lakes. which partially surround the Zagreb Zoo, Croatia, is described. Investigations were carried out during a winter period at seven sites. Physical, chemical and bacteriologic parameters relevant for surface water categorization were determined. The results obtained indicated that, depending on the site of sampling, the water could be classified as class two or three, according to organic contamination, i.e., as having low, to moderately contaminated surface water. The quality of the lake water was found to be related to both anthropogenic and Zoo fauna effects.
