Bivalve community structure in the eastern Adriatic - a hydraulic dredge survey

Hydraulic dredge survey of bivalve communities in the eastern Adriatic was conducted from river Neretva estuary in the south to the island of Rab in the north during 2007 and 2008. Total of 105 hydraulic dredge samples were collected at depths ranging from 1 to 11 m. Samples of live bivalves were separated in the field and frozen for later laboratory analysis that included species identification, abundance and biomass determination. Live specimens of 54 bivalve species were collected during this study out of which in terms of biomass most represented species in decreasing order were Callista chione, Glycymeris violascens, Ostrea edulis, Mytilus galloprovincialis, Modiolus barbatus, Venus verrucosa, Chamelea gallina, G. bimaculata, Acanthocardia tuberculata and G. glycymeris. Univariate and multivariate statistical analysis were applied for investigating bivalve community structure. Significant differences were noted with respect to geographic area and sediment characteristics. Obtained results are discussed in context of biodiversity and sustainable bivalve exploitation.
