A COLOUR ACCURATE REPRODUCTION OF GOUACHE PAINTINGS - A CASE STUDY

This paper investigates the possibilities of colour accurate digital imaging and reproduction of art paintings, without the need for excessive colour editing and visual adjustment. Colour accuracy between original paintings and printed output was optimized using colour management techniques. The objects of digitalisation were gouache paintings. For this purpose two custom gouache reference targets, with 24 and 96 colour samples, were constructed and used for camera colour characterization, along with two standard targets. The goal was to explore the effect of input profiles on colour image reproduction and to compare the quantitative aspects of colour to perceived differences in colour on reproduction. The results of this case study show that using the custom made targets for digital camera characterization can generate profiles that interpret original colours with more accuracy, then using a standard all purpose targets. Also, it was found out that the larger number of colour samples on target does not guaranty the more accurate camera profile. Additionally, visual and instrumental assessment of colour accuracy reveals that measured colour differences (especially ∆E*00) correlate well with the visual perception of the reproduced painting.
