Screen Element Circumference Measurement Method

Development of various new screen element shapes has provided new images for art graphics, security graphics, individualized graphics and additional elements in stochastic screening. Classifications of screen elements have also been set with several types of criteria: compactness, multiple outlines, mutant forms and stochastic deformations. The study of screen element coverage is being observed on two levels. The first level is as early as in the PostScript description where the screen element is obtained as a black and white piece of graphic with clearly defined edges. The second level refers to the print where each screen element is manifested from the totally black area over the gray border continuing to the white area. The screen element circumference measuring is carried out only in the first phase where there are sharp edges with black and white border. The paper contains a proposal for the algorithm to calculate the outline lengths for all screen elements and for all graylevels. More recent mutant screen element shapes have been described for which there are mathematical and software relations attached. Color graphics with a stochastic choice of screen element shape, screen ruling and screen angle are given as full PostScript solution and as an offset print. Software tools have been attached to the paper with mutant screen elements for testing and development of new graphic designs. Screen element design and application becomes a strong motivation to experiment and understand graphic reproduction.
