Perspectives and Contradictions of the European Language Policy.
Assuming there is currently no common language policy in Europe, the paper deals with different language political strategies of relevant national stakeholders in Europe, with a focus on the fields of science and education. It will be demonstrated that the current language policy with English as the main language of communication narrows scientific insight and further scientific development of national languages as well as the internationalisation of universities in Europe. On the opposite side a multilingual language policy and intercultural understanding in Europe are supported by the EU in its official language political documents. From this tension between monolingual science policy of national stakeholders and multilingual policy of the European Union, this paper examines the ways of regaining the culture of science and education characteristic for Europe.
