The interaction of the alkaline solution and the aluminium-oxide film during the printing plate making process
The non-image areas on the lithographic printing plate are built from roughened and porous aluminium-oxide film. During the plate making process the printing plate is immersed in alkaline solution to dissolve part of the photoactive layer. In this process it is impossible to avoid contact between alkaline solution and aluminium-oxide layer, which is also soluble in this kind of solution. The aim of this paper was to determine the influence of the alkaline solution on the surface properties of the aluminium-oxide film. Measurement of the contact angle was made by applying the defined chemical substances for calculation of surface free energy of aluminium-oxide. Roughness parameters were defined by topographical measurement to determine aluminium-oxide’s surface characteristics. The results showed that alkaline solutions cause significant change of the aluminium-oxide surfaces. This leads to conclusion that determination of developing process parameters must be precisely define in order to achieve printing plates of high quality level.
