Permian evaporites within Dinarides: an overview
Upper Permian sequences of the NW and Central Dinarides contain predominantly carbonate (limestone, early-diagenetic dolostone, Rauhwache), sabkha type evaporite (gypsum and anhydrite) and clastitc rocks (siltstone, sandstone and rare conglomerate ; Šušnjara et al., 1992 ; Tišljar, 1992). Upper Permian sequence is underlying by the Variscan basement composed of the Carboniferous siliciclastic deposits, Lower Permian mixed clastic–carbonate deposits and Lower/Middle Permian continental clastic deposits and overlying by Lower Triassic mixed clastic–carbonate or Tertiary deposits. Dinaride evaporite do not contain rock salt with the exception of the associated clastitc rocks from Dalmatia area containing halite molds (Šćavničar, B., 1973). Palinological analysis confirms Upper Permian age of the Dinaric evaporites (Šušnjara et al., 1992). Sulfur isotope analysis of gypsum and anhydrite gave values around 10‰, pointing to Permian marine sulfate source (Šiftar, 1986). At some places evaporites are associated with spilitized basaltic rocks (Sinj, Vrlika, Petrovo polje, Knin, island Vis). Ar/Ar age dating of K-feldspar separated from the island Vis spilite gave platoe age of 276.6±1.7 Ma.
