Two Croatian translations of "Through the Looking-Glass" by Lewis Carroll
In this study the only two Croatian translations of Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll (Buljan and Lalić 1962, Šoljan 1985) are compared to the original. Concepts of domestication and foreignization are explained and elaborated, as well as problems related to translating culture in general. The analysis focuses specifically on the strategies adopted by translators regarding puns and riddles, nonsense, the names of characters, poems, illustrations, and unusual situations. It is found that translators combine strategies of domestication and foreignization in different ways. The general conclusion is that one’s culture can never be fully translated and that translating does not mean translating literally, but also seeing the bigger picture and the context of the work which is being translated.
